#WDC400: 20W, Afrodroid Computer

About the project

#WDC400 aka 20W Afrodroid PC is the first African Android Computer.

- Fully featured Desktop Computer (PC) running Android 4.x
- It uses 10 times less electricity than a normal PC (consumes only 20 Watts of electricity, less than a light bulb)
- Can run using solar energy
- Easily fixable with standard parts

It has been designed for the African ecosystem and represents a sustainable IT solution.

The technical specifications of this Afrodroid PC are :

- 1Ghz Quad Core ARM Cortex-A9 SoC
- Android 4.x ROM onboard
- 1GB high performance DDR3 RAM onboard
- Flawless HD video performance up to 1080p
- HDMI and VGA output
- SATA port on-board
- Audio headphones output
- Microphone input on connector
- 2 x USB High-speed host with power control and current limiter
- MicroSD card connector
- WIFI Wireless chipset 150MB 802.11/B/G/N


Milestone 1: The Tipping Point - We reach this Milestone and our project is A-GO!

• Milestone 1: R70 000.00

To demonstrate the Proof of Concept of #WDC400, we need to fund the acquisition of CPU boards in small quantity from the manufacturer of the CPU and the prototyping of the computer case. This money will contribute to pay the team of engineers behind #WDC400 technology. A quantity of five CPU boards will be used by the software and hardware engineers of the project to develop the innovative parts of #WDC400: low power consumption, MESH networking. The prototyping of the computer case will bring on board and be inspired by local talent.

Once we successfully reach Milestone 1, we receive R10 000.00 match-funding from World Design Capital: Cape Town 2014.

• Milestone 2: R130 000.00

This extra funding will be used to develop, package and document the design of the software layer to convert an Android device into a MESH node. The MESH networking is a way to offer Internet connectivity by building a dynamic community network this means that one computer enables other computers in the area to connect to it. Hence, creating a “dynamic community network”. The design of this software layer will not be limited to #WDC400 and is aimed to work on any Android 4.x device (smartphone, tablet, AndroidTV Box, etc.)

• Milestone 3: R190 000.00

Cherry on the cake, with this extra funding we will be able to further develop, package and document a software layer in addition to the MESH NODE. It will enhance Android to convert it into a Super-Class Desktop Environment with Printer drivers, software to Burn CD/DVD, software to download torrent, software to manage Mass Storage, etc. This software layer is not limited #WDC400 and is aimed to work on any Android 4.x device (smartphone, tablet, AndroidTV Box, etc.) Read more
